It is 2008. An entity called ASTRA has been stealing sensitive weapons technology from the Dassault Group for over half a decade and selling it to individuals, costing the company $360 million and the world much more.[1] Ironically enough, ASTRA means “weapon” in Sanskrit.

Technology is changing the very nature of the world we live in. Currency, not to be left behind, is also adapting to this technology-driven change. As Charles Dixon says, “There are three types of currencies (today): commodity based, politically based and now maths based.”[1] This “maths based” currency is called cryptocurrency, which simply means virtual money. Cryptocurrency does not have any tangible existence but is electronically “mined” using complex mathematics and circulated over decentralized peer-to-peer computer networks both as a currency and security.

In today’s day and age, where a majority of our lives are documented on the internet through online registrations, Instagram uploads and various social media profiles; data collection and the protections around the same are becoming exceedingly critical. Data Privacy (or as otherwise known as Data protection), aims at protecting private data collected through an interdependent relationship between the gathering and dissemination of data, the expectation of privacy, technology and politico-legal issues surrounding the same. Data privacy regulations strive to strike a balance between the utilization of data whilst also protecting the particular individual’s privacy preferences with respect to their personally identifiable information that they have provided to Big Data collectors. The fields of computer, data and information security utilize a variety of software and human resources to handle any issues that arise with respect to Data Privacy.

In this Age of Digitalization, technological innovation has permeated nearly every profession. One question that arises when considering the personhood of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the existence of a moral status for the technology. For example, most people believe human life is more valuable than animal life. Utilitarian would believe that anything with the capacity to suffer has moral status accordingly. It is a measure of how much consideration the well-being of an entity deserves.

Mobile devices these days, have become a common place and they affect how financial services are offered in addition to the consumption of these services. Niti Aayog Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Amitabh Kant said “Debit cards, credit cards and ATMs might lose relevance in the next four years”. FinTech is a model in the financial services industry which provides an end-to-end process through the Internet. The government is pushing for digital India by introducing reforms such as AADHAAR, e-KYC, low cost NPCI/UPI transaction system, etc. In fact, the budget of 2018 lays special focus on this whole program with an expenditure of Rs. 3,073 crore for the next financial year. But, the scope of cryptocurrency has not been legitimized in the budget either. Marketplace models such as policybazzar.com, bankbazaar.com have reduced their information arbitrage, lowered costs and provide greater choice for consumers.

Blockchain based smart contracts have the potential to interrupt business as well as financial technology in the same way as online commerce interfered with the offline one. Marc Anderson, co-writer of Mosaic and co-founder of Netscape says, “when we are sitting here in 20 years, we will be talking about blockchain technology the way we talk about the Internet today”.
